massacre. earlier on cnn, l.a. mayor antonio villaraigosa responded to critics who questioned the effectiveness of gun buyback programs. >> well, there are experts say we should have an assault weapons ban, we shouldn't -- that we should continue this amendment that prohibits us from doing what we should do to enforce our gun laws. those same experts pooh-pooh virtually everything we try to do and this is a great opportunity for people to get involved themselves and not wait on washington. i'm supporting senator feinstein's assault weapons ban. we have one in california. you can buy guns, assault weapons in arizona and bring them here. you'll get arrested, but they do that as well. we need to toughen our laws with our gun shows. 40% of all the guns that are purchased don't require a background check because they're purchased from private sellers. there are a number of things we can do this is just one of them, not the only thing, we got to also address the culture of violence we have in this country. too many people think it is just okay to shoot people and the way you see too

, antonio villaraigosa who helped broker the deal to get the port workers back on the job. i want to talk about the port in just a moment. first i want to talk about pressing national business. something called the fiscal cliff, which i know you have been watching. you're very closely aligned with president obama having been the chair of the democratic national convention in september. i want to get your take on this. this is critical to your state. businesses in your state. taxpayers in your state. do you have any optimism that we may not go off the cliff? >> i do have optimism. there's no question about it. i think both sides understand that it's not in the nation's best interest for us to go off this cliff. people are tired of the partisanship. they want both sides to work together. they want them to do so in a balanced way. i agreed to join the stirring committee to fix the debt coalition and i have because the balance is that we have to make spending cuts. we have to address entitlements but we also have to make sure that we have the revenues that we need to make the investments that
dollars and police go and destroy those guns. i want to bring in antonio villaraigosa. good to see you back here. >> good to see you, brooke. >> let me begin with l.a. i know you're moving up the annual gun buyback from may to the day after christmas. you're offering grocery store gift cards up to 200 bucks in exchange for the guns. no questions asked. why do you think this works? >> well, we worked with a group of mothers who had lost their children. mother's day we're going to accelerate this a bit and do it a day after christmas. it works because of guns that could otherwise be stolen or used in a crime, used to hurt someone off the streets. we have collected assault weapons, grenade launchers, guns of every sort, rifles, everything you can imagine over the years. about 8,000 of them. and we're going to do it again the day after christmas. it is a way for people to get involved. people are asking me, what can i do? obviously we can support legislation to tighten our gun laws, both at the state and federal level. but people want to do more than that. this is an opportunity for people
